The Compounding Pharmacy Framework
The US has two categories of licensed compounding pharmacy under the Drug Quality and Security Act of 2013. 503A pharmacies prepare medications for individual patients pursuant to a specific prescription from a licensed physician. 503B outsourcing facilities produce larger quantities for hospitals and clinics without patient-specific prescriptions.
Why 503A Matters for Peptide Therapy
When a physician prescribes BPC-157, Sermorelin, or CJC-1295 for you, that prescription goes to a 503A compounding pharmacy. The pharmacy compounds the specific medication to your prescription โ your name, your dose, your formulation. This is fundamentally different from mass-produced pharmaceuticals and from research chemical vendors.
503A Quality Standards
503A pharmacies are licensed and regulated by their state pharmacy board. They must comply with USP standards for compounded preparations. Quality testing requirements vary by state but typically include potency testing and sterility testing for injectable preparations. The best 503A pharmacies go beyond minimum requirements with independent third-party COA testing on every batch.
